Why Mongolian Cashmere is the Finest in the World

Not all cashmere is the same. And if you've ever wondered why some cashmere sweaters feel like a second skin while others scratch, pill within weeks, and lose their shape after a single wash — the answer begins in the highlands of Inner Mongolia, thousands of metres above sea level.

This is where the finest cashmere in the world comes from. And this is why it matters.

The goat that makes it all possible

Cashmere comes from one specific breed of goat — the Capra Hircus. These animals have lived for centuries in the extreme climates of Inner Mongolia and Kashmir, where temperatures drop to -40°C in winter and soar above 35°C in summer.

To survive these conditions, the Capra Hircus developed a double coat. A coarse outer layer for protection. And beneath it — a layer of extraordinarily fine, soft fibres that trap heat and regulate temperature with a precision no synthetic material has ever replicated.

Those inner fibres are cashmere.

Why Inner Mongolia specifically

Cashmere is produced in several regions — Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iran, China — but Inner Mongolia consistently produces the finest fibres in the world. The reason is the climate.

The extreme cold forces the goats to grow exceptionally dense, fine undercoats. The dry, mineral-rich pastures affect the quality of the fibres at a cellular level. And the vast, open grasslands allow the goats to roam freely — which matters more than most people realise. Stress affects fibre quality. Healthy, free-roaming goats produce better cashmere.

The finest Mongolian cashmere fibres measure between 14 and 16 microns in diameter. To put that in perspective — a human hair measures approximately 70 microns. Mongolian cashmere is five times finer.

The hand-combing process — why it matters

In spring, as temperatures rise, the Capra Hircus naturally sheds its winter undercoat. Herders who have cared for these animals for generations comb — never cut — the fine inner fibres by hand during this natural moult.

This is not a small detail. Hand-combing is slower, more labour-intensive, and more expensive than shearing. But it preserves the integrity of each fibre. Shearing cuts through both the coarse outer coat and the fine inner coat, mixing them together and reducing quality. Hand-combing isolates only the finest fibres.

The result is a raw material of exceptional purity — before a single thread has been spun.

From fibre to garment — why traceability matters

A cashmere fibre of exceptional quality can be destroyed at any point in the production chain — through poor spinning, harsh chemical treatments, or irresponsible manufacturing.

This is why traceability matters as much as origin.

At Constance The Label, we source our cashmere exclusively from Inner Mongolia, working with a yarn spinner who maintains a complete traceability system from fibre to finished garment. Every step is documented. Every decision is made with longevity in mind.

When your Constance piece arrives, you know exactly where it comes from. That level of transparency is rare in this industry. We believe it shouldn't be.

What this means for your garment

The difference between Mongolian cashmere and lower-grade alternatives is not a marketing claim. It is physical, tactile, and immediate.

Pure Inner Mongolian cashmere is softer against the skin. It regulates temperature more effectively — warm in cold weather, breathable in mild temperatures. It pills less over time because the fibres are longer and finer. And it lasts longer — decades, not seasons — when properly cared for.

A garment made from genuine Inner Mongolian cashmere is not a purchase. It is an investment in something that will be part of your wardrobe for the rest of your life.

How to recognise genuine Mongolian cashmere

When shopping for cashmere, ask these questions :

  • Does the brand specify the origin of the fibre ?
  • Is the cashmere 100% pure or a blend ?
  • Does the brand mention the grade or micron count ?
  • Is the production process traceable ?

If the answers are vague or absent — that tells you something.

At Constance The Label, we answer all of these questions clearly. Because we have nothing to hide and everything to be proud of.
