How to store your fur coat | 3 tips to keep your fur coats brand new
Fur coats are timeless, delicate and beautiful pieces. They are often even treasures of ancestors that have been passed down through the generations. Fur coats are real statement pieces and they rarely lose their value. That's why it is so important to take proper care of them in order to preserve their beauty. Storing a beautiful winter coat isn't as simple as storing other winter accessories. That's why I thought it was important to share some of my personal tips in order to keep your fur coats and cashmere coats in perfect condition.
Consider the following steps to keep your fur coats safe during the off-season:
Choose a cool & dark place for your fur coats
Be sure that the place you choose to store your fur coat is cool and dark. Furs do not tolerate warm temperatures very well, as it tends to dry out the fur and leather of the winter coat. On top of that, exposing your fur coat to direct sunlight for a long time can cause fading and discoloring of the fur. I also recommend to avoid storing it in the attic or garage, and instead store it in a spacious closet that does not get direct sunlight and is climate-controlled.
Choose the right hangers for your fur coats
Fur coats tend to be heavier than other winter coats without fur. That's why it is very important to choose the right hanger. If you opt for a plastic or wire hanger it will not offer enough support for your coat and chances are, your coat will loose its shape at the shoulders. Instead, choose for a larger wooden hanger that can fully support the weight of your fur coat.
Give your fur coats and cashmere coats space to breathe
Your winter coats need a lot of space to breathe. The air keeps the natural materials like cashmere and fur dry, which helps to prevent mold and unpleasant odors.
If you want to store your coats in garment bags, be sure to use appropriate garment bags that are breathable and avoid plastic bags.
